==Appearance==
Raen is a 6'1" human with an athletic build. He is light skinned with blonde hair (cut longer at the top and front) and blue eyes. He typically wears a casual short sleeved shirt (most often red), with breeches, a belt, and sturdy tall riding boots. He is almost always wearing a plain, thin golden circlet that sits across his forehead under his bangs.

Raen's right arm is afflicted with a curse, causing pain and significant loss of function. He normally keeps it bandaged from palm to shoulder and secured in a sling.

Raen's other notable articles of clothing include a cloak, which he will wear most often to obscure his sling; and a pair of glasses, which he mainly wears for reading. <strike>He also has and allegedly wears leather armor, which is mostly just there for the gameplay aspect of not getting murdered every roll and which I will almost definitely never draw him actually wearing. I guess we could imagine he wears it under his shirt like lacrosse pads or something.</strike> A frog genie man gave him a mithril mail shirt!!!! Now he has a whopping 13 AC.

Raen is right-handed, which is a real problem for him right now.

==Raen's Mysterious Backstory==

Raen was born on his family farm in Idyllmouth in August of 1311 ([[Fairweather Vale|Fairweather Vale reckoning]]), where he also spent his childhood. Raen's father runs the farm, and his mother is the local schoolteacher. He has one younger brother. His family grew various crops and also raised animals.

===Love Temple===
The spring before his 21st birthday, Raen set out to travel the country, as is the tradition in his area. Not having a particular plan in mind, he wandered somewhat aimlessly through the summer into the autumn. While trekking through the mountains, he spotted an apple on a tree on the other side of a stone wall...

== History ==

Much of Daphne's history prior to recent events is unknown. At some point, she met the dragon [[Zip]], who was shapeshifted into a faerie dragon, and they traveled together for some time. She began to receive dreams from the Dreaming Celestial, promising her "pretty colors" if she stole the opal that was the key to the Dreaming Celestial's slumber and brought it there.

== Daphne's Quest ==

The Lighthaus Inspektorz encountered her while she and Zip were being chased by three eladrin through a strand of woods between Florsea and Miranda's tower to the west of town. They inserted themselves between Daphne and the eladrin, and Daphne subtly cast ''suggestion'' on Raen, asking him to protect her. [[Nergil]], in turn, succeeded with his ''charm monster'' spell, although she was already inclined to be friendly and open with him. The Lighthouse Inspectorz offered to escort her on her journey, as the eladrin refused to work with her and only wanted the opal back.

She led them through a fairy circle into the Feywild and to what she called the first gate - although she had absolutely no idea how to enter it, inspiring doubt about the eventual success of her quest. When Nergil awoke the dryad in the old tree, the secret Daphne offered as a price was that she had once (accidentally) punched a unicorn.

As the Lighthause Inspektors climbed the rock spire that formed the second gate, Daphne meekly followed, offering little either assistance or hindrance. She avoided damage from either rockfall and came back down the path when the group turned around.

At the pond, she waited patiently as the LI attempted to figure out the gate. When [[Corrin]] awoke a treant, Raen threw spells from afar while ensuring she was safe. As the LI spent time going for a swim once the treant was defeated, Daphne drank from the pond, discovering its strange properties and informing Nergil that the water "tasted purple". She was the second person to enter.

As everyone emerged from the water on the other side, Zip called to her to run and break the opal she carried. Nergil was unable to stop her from shattering it on the Dreaming Celestial's grave. Doing this appeared to break the spell that enchanted her as well, leaving her paralyzed with fear. [[Mino]] managed to grab her out of the way, and [[Ro]] acted protectively, but after being knocked over by Zip's wingbeat in his full black dragon form, she ran off into the forest surrounding the gloomy clearing. Mino chased after her briefly to beg for her help, although she seemed to interpret this as an act of aggression and fled further in.

After the battle, [[Quill]] used ''sending'' to check on her. Although she didn't seem to recognize him, her bright personality won out and she informed him that she would be just fine.

== Personality and Abilities ==

Daphne has a bright and fun-loving personality. She is slightly gullible and easy to reward, as she was willing to steal from the eladrin in exchange for seeing pretty colors. She is fairly trusting, as she is happy to have the Inspektorz join her, although she isn't above offering ''suggestions'' to others in her favor. However, she was terrified by the Dreaming Celestial and Mino, so she perhaps has more of a sense of self-preservation than bravery.

As a faun, Daphne has some resistance to spells and other magical effects, and can run and jump more sure-footedly than others.

She demonstrated some facility with magic, casting ''message'' and ''suggestion'', and having access to other enchantment magic.

== Trivia ==

Daphne uses the Enchanter stat block from ''Volo's Guide to Monsters'', with the following modifications from the "satyr" player race: her creature type is fey instead of humanoid, she has the magic resistance trait, and her movement speed is increased to 35 feet.

It's not entirely clear - i.e., Jamie didn't decide - if Zip sent the dreams pretending to be the Dreaming Celestial, or the Dreaming Celestial actually sent the dreams and Zip took advantage of the situation.

Swansing lies roughly in the center of the Vale, on the shore of [[Lake Toncor]]. It is surrounded by several hills, including [[Nophica]]'s Hill (which now lies entirely within the walls of the city), [[Brand]]'s Hill, and [[Nald and Thal|The Twins]]. The hills are riddled with natural caves and underground waterways, which provides access to wells to the farmland surrounding the hills.

Originally just a small keep on the lakeshore, the city has grown by adding new walls around itself. This has resulted in the creation of fifteen walled districts, listed below. Swansing lies roughly in the center of the Vale, on the shore of [[Lake Toncor]]. It is surrounded by several hills, including [[Nophica]]'s Hill (which now lies entirely within the walls of the city), [[Brand]]'s Hill, and [[Nald and Thal|The Twins]]. The hills are riddled with natural caves and underground waterways, which provides access to wells to the farmland surrounding the hills.

Originally just a small keep on the lakeshore, the city has grown by adding new walls around itself. This has resulted in the creation of fifteen walled districts, listed below. Each district is generally named after the Duke who built it, with a few exceptions. The Old Keep, the original castle at the heart of the city, is the smallest, while the largest district, Gienno, encircles the entirety of Nophica's Hill.

Like most cities in the Vale, Swansing is built around or near intersections of various [[ley lines]]. Unusually, most of these intersecting points lie around Swansing, not within the borders of the city proper.

Because nearly every district formed part of the outer walls of the city at one time or another, there are gates between most districts. The gates are sometimes referred to by a district's name, e.g., the Maerquel Gate or the Cauls Gate, although this is more true for some than others.

== Leadership ==

The current ruler is Duke [[Athtar]], who has been in power for 172 years. High elf nobles typically abdicate in favor of their [[Nobility#inheritance|heir or tanist]] at some point to seek other pursuits, as elf culture values change and a diversity of experiences. This makes Athtar's long reign - the longest in the Vale's history by almost 63 years - extremely unusual.

== History ==

While Swansing is the second major city to have been founded, it is not the second-oldest. As mentioned above, it was originally a small keep by Lake Toncor, hidden in the hills; the city has expanded considerably over the following millennium.

The coronet is one of, if not the most tightly held throughout the Vale's history. Nearly all of the title's holders have been dukes; there have only ever been one dux and two duchesses, and of those, but one duchess (Nallabe) gave her name to a district. A direct line can be traced, through heir or tanist, from the first duke to today. The title has never reverted to [[the crown]] or the [[grand duchy]].

Unlike the other [[duchy|duchies]] and most of the [[marquisate|marquisates]], there is no Castle Swansing. The Duke's residence was originally the Old Keep, referred to in contemporary sources simply as Swansing Keep. Exact dates are unclear, but by the time Yenshir was constructed, the duke had moved residence to a palace constructed in Rorgerry, currently in its third iteration.

=== The Mage's Guild ===

Swansing is home to a famously insular mage's guild, which is run quite differently than the academic organizations or master/student relationships found in other cities. Although it provides many of the same services, such as research assistance through libraries and credentialing, it is not welcoming to spellcasters who have studied in other traditions. The mage's guild has several locations, although its guildhouse is located in Yenshir.

=== Temple of the Matron ===

At the top of Nophica's Hill stands a temple dedicated to Nophica, the goddess of the harvest. Until the construction of Gienno's Wall, and the Gienno district, it was not actually part of the city. Tensions generated by the annexation have never truly subsided, and the temple has often found itself as a fierce counterbalance to the politics of the city. The only path to the top begins at the base of the Hill district, the most recent district to be constructed and the latest source of conflict between the city and the temple, who don't agree with its construction on the sacred hill.
