Mino is one of the [[Lighthouse Inspectorz]].

Mino was raised by [[Salty Jim]] who found Mino in the woods and vouched for his adoption into the guild to Mason "The Bone Collector" Lafayette, a Vulture Arrakokra and the leader of the Thieves Guild. Think a mixture of Don Vito Corleone and Fagin from Oliver Twist. In his youth, Mason was a gentleman thief and assassin-for-hire, who took a single bone from each of his victims, supposedly without ever actually cutting them open to do it. Mason built the Thieves Guild up over a series of decades by recruiting skilled craftspeople in various illicit arts and through the “adoption” and training of just about any orphan children the guild stumbled across. The guild typically avoided highwayman tactics of on the road wagon robberies (though exceptions were made for high level targets), preferring instead to sneak into large cities under various guises (traveling actor troupes, masonry workers, missionaries for one god or another-these ruses are what inspired Mino’s attempt at “Lighthouse Inspectors”) and try to pull as many jobs as possible before arousing suspicions and moving on to the next place.

It was Jim who taught Mino how to fight, in particular with a great axe. Known for his boisterous attitude and always having a leg of ham in one hand, Salty Jim was beloved by the Thieves Guild. Under his tutelage, Mino learned how to tap into his Barbarian rage and became the fighter we know him as today.

Mino’s childhood best friend and eventually (and only) major romantic relationship. Syd was a Drow who was around the same age as Mino. They also were raised in the Thieves’ Guild, but their mom, Queveth Arabate, was Mason’s second in command. Queveth was a master assassin (specializing in poisons) and gifted in the art of lock picking and safe cracking. Mino and Syd had many opposing qualities. Mino was brute force while Syd was lithe and agile. Syd was one of the few people who could beat Mino in a sparring match, primarily because they were the only ones quick enough to dodge Mino’s brute force to hit his weak spots. Syd had a dry, acerbic wit and was a skilled instrumental musician, though their signing voice left a lot to be desired. Their relationship began in late teens and lasted for about 2 years. It was the type of young love where it feels equal parts like a fun fling but carried the weight of knowing you’re old enough that this could be person you spend your life with. The relationship abruptly ended when Syd and Queveth mysteriously left the Guild. Rumors of a falling out between Mason and Queveth swirled. Syd left no note. Mino has not seen them since.

Not long after Syd’s disappearance, Salty Jim died on a botched job in Waterdeep. The job was supposed to involve members of the guild posing as sewer drain inspectors who needed to shut down a block of the city to do repairs. They would use explosives to blow open a hole under one of the largest banks in Waterdeep and collect the coin below. As the explosives were being prepped for detonation, Salty Jim ordered the job to stop in order to clear a young girl out of the blast zone who had wandered into the closed off street. This put Jim in direct line of sight with members of the city watch who had been tipped off to the job. Salty Jim attempted to talk his way out of it, but was killed in the streets by the guards. Mino was part of the crew for the job, and the sight of Jim’s body bleeding out on the cobblestones of Waterdeep still haunts him. He suspects to this day that someone in the Guild tipped off the city watch. Mino left the Guild that night without saying a word.

Mino spent several months in an alcohol fueled bender after Salty Jim's death. Many of his memories are hazy, but his first memory of this time is stumbling across Abbot Darak, a dragonborn monk of the Way of the Immaterial. The Way of the Immaterial monks believe that the body is capable of overcoming all physical harm so long as one as in touch with their emotional and spiritual self. Through his time with these dragonborn monks, Mino learned how to withstand the physical harm of various elemental forces, while also becoming very emotionally available. This unlocking of his emotions helped him to tap into the totemic spirit of the bull that aids him in great feats of strength and his ability to identify planar anomalies. After spending a few years with them, Mino decided he needed to strike out on his own to make up for the sins of his past and looked for ways to help people as he traveled the world.

=Critical Acclaim=
The books are VERY popular in the Vale. They are so in demand that stores can't keep full sets of the series in stock, and bandits may or may not be robbing caravans just to obtain them specifically.

Raen obtains book 7 at Thoreau's Tomes in the [[Ursly]] MegaMart on June 7, 1337 (along with <i>Dracula</i>). He returns and purchases books 4 and 12 two days later, on June 9.

Tahm Kench, the River King, is a demonic force of hunger personified that resides on the Material Plane. Unlike the devils of the Hells or the demons of the Abyss who are independent and can be killed, Tahm Kench's existence isn't separate from mortals and he can't be killed. According to his own words, so long as mortals exist and have desires, so will he.

Tahm consumes the desires of mortals, so he attempts to tempt them into wanting more and more. He has some instinctual knowledge of what a creature wants most, both the desire and how to grant it. His interested piqued, the man accepted the bargain, telling falsehoods to his hosts. The river parted again and he followed it to an evening of even greater luxury. This continued, night after night, until the once-honest raftsman's deceits came as easily as breathing. When the river finally emptied into the sea at Old Bay, he found himself alone and lost in the big city — there was no one left to lie to, but no one who would know or believe the truth either. So many dark choices, all of them his own, had left the raftsman with no way back home."

Raen is a 6'1" human with an athletic build. He is light skinned with blonde hair (cut longer at the top and front) and blue eyes. He typically wears a casual short sleeved shirt (most often red), with breeches, a belt, and sturdy tall riding boots. He is almost always wearing a plain, thin golden circlet that sits across his forehead under his bangs.

Raen's right arm is afflicted with a curse, causing pain and significant loss of function. He normally keeps it bandaged from palm to shoulder and secured in a sling.

Raen's other notable articles of clothing include a cloak, which he will wear most often to obscure his sling; and a pair of glasses, which he mainly wears for reading. <strike>He also has and allegedly wears leather armor, which is mostly just there for the gameplay aspect of not getting murdered every roll and which I will almost definitely never draw him actually wearing. She openly claims rulership over dreams and stories, mysteries, portents, and omens, although only she knows the true extent of her domains. She is said to have been the first witch, potentially giving her some sway over magical practice. Nymeia is unusual in that her divine domains are not related to her primary duty as the shepherd of the Lost Dead, those who die without another god claiming their soul. Because of this, she is often mistaken for a goddess of [[death]] or fate. Most humanoid cultures offer some kind of reverance, though typically moreso out of a sense of obligation for her role in the afterlife. One notable exception is her worship by hags, who consider her their patron and foremother. Her epithets include '''the Spinner''', '''the Queen of Dreams''', and less reverentially, '''the Graveyard Hag'''. Among hags, she is known as '''the Great Crone''' or '''the Hag Mother'''.

Nymeia's parentage or origin is unknown, and she certainly hasn't given any indication otherwise - though she has claimed to be as old as [[Steorra]] or [[Dohter]]. The only partner she is known to have had is [[Alephan]], with whom she has two children: [[Byregot]] and [[Bifelgan]], though little is known about this relationship as they give no indication of remaining together. Through Bifelgan, [[Nald and Thal]] are her grandchildren. She has three other children, of unknown parentage: [[Balogar]] and the twin goddesses [[Tymora and Beshaba]].

Nymeia is said to have studied under [[Steorra]] for a time in her Starlight Citadel, although what she studied remains a mystery. This is another reason why Nymeia is sometimes considered to be a goddess of fate.

Nymeia is considered to be the mother of witchcraft, and is venerated by hags - humanoids voluntarily transformed by witchcraft - for this reason. Nymeia's stance toward hags is unclear, because they are not inherently evil, and the various races rarely want to interact with hags long enough to find out.

Nymeia's relationships with the darker gods are complicated. She is said to be [[Rhalgr]]'s master, helping or hindering him according to her own hidden designs. [[Sealticge]] is Aelfric's wife, with whom he has two children, [[Ascima]] and [[Menphina]]. His twin brother is [[Tharzidun|Tharzidun, the Chained Oblivion]], so [[Orcus]] is his nephew.

Tharzidun seeks to subsume everything into darkness, to reduce all to nothing. Aelfric saw this danger and took up arms against his brother, eventually succeeding in chaining him within his own demiplane, giving Tharzidun the epithet "The Chained Oblivion". Aelfric's followers are driven to continue the work their divine patron started, stamping out cults of Tharzidun wherever they can be found.

When they were children, he and Tharzidun found twin divine beasts while they were playing. The twins each raised one of the beasts, and the beast took on aspects of its master. While Aelfric's beast, [[Allynlear]] grew to become loyal and strong, Tharzidun's beast [[Nidizzar]] became twisted as its master's heart was consumed by darkness. When Aelfric chained his twin, Allynlear echoed his master's desire by seeking out and hunting Nidizzar.

Most cultural pantheons at least acknowledge her, although elf cultures in particular hold her in regard with her sister as the two lights of the sky. Human and halfling cultures tend to value her more in her role as the goddess of love. Her epithets include '''the Lover''' and '''Tender of the Moon'''.

Unsurprisingly, Menphina's major symbol is a moon. Either the full moon or crescent moon can represent her, and sometimes the two are drawn together (the crescent inside the full circle). One variation has the crescent moon with the tips pointed up, although this symbol is historically more associated with sailors.

Like all deities, Menphina can choose her appearance on the Material Plane. When appearing as herself, she nearly always appears and is depicted as a young woman, although her race and other details notably vary at her whim. Winnehild always appears and is depicted as female. Her preferred appearance is that of a human in her physical prime, with chin-length red hair and a suit of armor that leaves her arms free. Although, because like all deities Winnehild can choose her appearance on the Material Plane, she has also been known to appear as an orc, dwarf, or gnome.

Most notably, Winnehild is depicted as having up to two extra pairs of arms, with each of her six arms wielding a different weapon. Each weapon corresponds to a mundane or celestial animal that is considered sacred to her. Depending on the depiction, these animals are both her messengers or representatives, and then become the very weapons she wields.

==Worship==

Winnehild's formal temples are few and far between. She has no known major festivals, nor a recorded liturgy or canon. There is a conspicuous lack of codified tradition, lending credence to her apotheosis myth. If prayers are made to her, she is more likely to send one of her animal companions to intercede for her on the supplicant's behalf.

Because of this, it is said that she values deed more than thought. She favors those who honor her animal companions, who fell in battle for her. Warriors who seek her favor often bring a symbol of an animal companion into battle, such as wearing a tiger claw necklace or braiding a crow or phoenix feather into their hair, carrying her companions into battle as she did.

==Myths==

Winnehild's demiplane, the ''Battlefield Eternale'', lies adjacent to Ysgard and Acheron. It is a land of unending combat against all manner of opponents.

One myth depicts Winnehild as a mortal adventurer who achieved an apotheosis. During her journeys, she befriended all manner of creatures great and small and from them learned to master all kinds of fighting styles and weaponry. When she fell in battle defending an innocent child, her six companions sacrificed themselves to allow the child to escape. For their great deeds, Winnehild and her companions were raised to godhood. Notably, origin myths concerning Winnehild are few and far between, so this may have some basis in fact. It also makes her a favored god of rangers.

[[Halone]] is Winnehild's bitter rival, as her cold, warlike nature and her relation to her father, [[Balogar]], earned her some worship as a war goddess. Despite this, Winnehild does not appear to give much thought to the rivalry. Winnehild's close relationship with her brother, [[Brand]] the hero god, is said to irk her all the more.

She is said to gather the souls of those fallen heroically in battle. These warriors fight each other in various arrangements and armies on the Battlefield Eternale, sometimes under Winnehild's command and sometimes against her.

When Althyk dies at the end of time, she will give a great cry as she leads the warriors' souls into battle in the War To End All Wars. Her goal is to buy time for the other gods to lay to rest Althyk and the world, lest it become a hellscape of eternal stagnation and entropy.

Aeber is the trickster god. He is worshipped by thieves and rogues. Like his brother [[Brand]], he is a god of justice, but actively seeks retribution on behalf of the wronged; those seeking revenge often ask for his blessing. Dwarven and gnomish culture value his cunning; halfling and elven culture value his love of freedom, though he is a major god in drow culture more than high elven; orcish culture makes offerings only to placate or distract him, rather than worships any of his qualities. His epithets include '''the Prince of Thieves''' or '''Clever Aeber'''.

==Symbols and Depictions==

Aeber has few symbols, as a job well done calls little attention to itself. One particular glyph, that of two broken circles stacked vertically, the top broken to the right and the bottom to the left, represents the broken shackles of freedom. Crows and other corvids are sacred to him.

Aeber always appears as and is depicted as a man. Although like all deities, Aeber can choose his appearance on the Material Plane, he has shown no preference for race; history can only say that he seems to favor human, halfling, and tabaxi forms. As a trickster and shapeshifter, he seems to prefer to take the form most suited for his current goals. Notably, he has several recorded appearances as a goblin. No matter what form he takes, he is almost always wearing a tunic of dark purple and a cloak the color of a shadow at midnight, and wields two daggers.

Aeber has no major temples in the Vale, and few outside it. He has no major worship traditions, festivals, or holy days. When he is invoked, it is usually with a prayer to the effect of, "Aeber, help me take what's mine."

Halone shares his sense of righteous anger, although she cares more for slights made against herself than others. Aeber's closest companions are Nald and Thal, his cousins; to the vexation of their father, Bifelgan. Aeber taught them what they know of trickery.

Aeber's first recorded deed as a trickster comes early in his youth, being caught as a scout by Maglubiyet when the Onslaught marched to defeat Brand after conquering his own siblings. By the time Brand had fought his way deep into Maglubiyet's jail to save his brother, Aeber was patiently waiting outside the jail, all of the prisoners released, and the cages relocked with the hobgoblin wardens inside. Grankhul in particular is his rival; Grankhul fights with cunning in battle, but Aeber would rather avoid combat altogether.

As a thief, there are stories of Aeber tricking or stealing from nearly every god save for [[Steorra]] and [[Althyk]]. He has justifiably earned the ire of most of the dark gods. However, he is particularly hated by [[Vecna]], having once stolen a secret back from the Secret-Thief herself. In turn, Aeber has a hatred for [[Zehir]], as the Cloaked Serpent uses the cover of darkness not to aid but to harm. He has a running rivalry with [[Asmodeus]], who also fancies himself a trickster.

Brand is the god of storms and the weather, as well as justice. He represents the warrior who defends the vulnerable, and is said to both protect the nobility as well as hold them accountable to those over whom they rule. He is often invoked for protection from evil. He is a popular god in human, halfling, and dwarven cultures, although most cultures pay homage to him in some way in his role as the bringer of storms and rain. His epithets include '''the Thunderblade''' or '''the Thunder-bladed'''.

Brand's major symbol is the lightning bolt, representing his domain over storms as well as his ability to strike like lightning against injustice. He is occasionally represented by a sword crossed with a lightning bolt, particularly when invoked for protection. Some texts indicate that an open hand was once used as his symbol, but it appears to have fallen out of favor and practice.

Brand always appears as and is depicted as a man. Although like all deities, Brand can choose his appearance on the Material Plane, he typically appears as a human warrior - although he has been known to appear as a dwarf, orc, or half-orc, usually with short hair and eyes, both gray like a stormcloud with streaks of gold. He almost always wears a chain shirt and tabard, and carries a greatsword, the Thunderblade itself.

His heroism allowed the goblinoids to choose for themselves if they wanted to pursue the path of war Maglubiyet laid before them. Maglubiyet has hated him ever since, more than Halone or Aeber, and Brand has clashed with him or his brothers many times.

As a hero god, Brand has clashed with other dark gods. Nophica has requested his assistance against [[Incabulos]] on more than one occasion. He also has dared to liberate those trapped unjustly in Carceri or by [[Torog]], earning him Torog's eternal ire.

Draefendi is the goddess of the hunt. All beasts are hers to care for, both domesticated and wild. While she thrills in the chase, she abhors those who hunt for pleasure and not consumption. She is worshipped in nearly every culture in some way, although her importance in any given pantheon depends on that culture's relationship to animal products. For example, her role as huntress is diminished in halfling culture, but she appears as shepherd and protector of livestock from predators. In some goblinoid or orc cultures, her role is replaced by [[Luthic]] or [[Baphomet]]. Her epithets include '''the Huntress''' and '''the Protector of the Wild'''.

Draefendi always appears and is depicted as female. Although like all deities Draefendi can choose her appearance on the Material Plane, she most often chooses to appear as a wood elf with reddish-brown hair and dark eyes. For this reason, wood elves of any gender are said to bear her likeness. She typically appears in fur-trimmed garments, ranging from hunting leathers to a shepherd's cloak. Her greatbow, ''Artemisia'', is said to be taller than her and capable of striking a target at any distance.

When she appeared to [[Corrin]] in April 1337, she appeared with a fur-trimmed cloak, armor stitched together from many hides, and her hair in a long braid.

The stag and doe are her sacred animals. The symbol that most commonly represents her is a spear with the point down, with two branching antlers curving upwards on each side, mimicking a bow and arrow.

Draefendi has no major festivals common to more than one culture. Instead, smaller offerings are typically made before a hunt (for luck) or after a hunt (in thanks). Common mugwort is usually burned as an offering, but animal parts such as hearts or claws are also suitable.

Yeenoghu did its best to serve Draefendi, but the story goes that while searching for a lost animal by her side, Yeenoghu gave in to its base hunger and killed the animal when it found it. [[Tharzidun]], [[Vecna]], and Baphomet]] have variously claimed responsibility for corrupting Yeenoghu. But whatever the case, Draefendi cast Yeenoghu away out of anger. Yeenoghu formed a pack of its own from hyenas that followed, and those hyenas that shared its kills were transformed into the first [[gnoll|gnolls]].

Swansing (formally the '''Duchy of Swansing''') is a city in the [[Fairweather Vale]].

== Geography ==

Swansing lies roughly in the center of the Vale, on the shore of [[Lake Toncor]]. It is surrounded by several hills, including [[Nophica]]'s Hill (which now lies entirely within the walls of the city), [[Brand]]'s Hill, and [[Nald and Thal|The Twins]]. The hills are riddled with natural caves and underground waterways, which provides access to wells to the farmland surrounding the hills.

Originally just a small keep on the lakeshore, the city has grown by adding new walls around itself. This has resulted in the creation of fifteen walled districts, listed below. Each district is generally named after the Duke who built it, with a few exceptions. The Old Keep, the original castle at the heart of the city, is the smallest, while the largest district, Gienno, encircles the entirety of Nophica's Hill.

Like most cities in the Vale, Swansing is built around or near intersections of various [[ley lines]]. Unusually, most of these intersecting points lie around Swansing, not within the borders of the city proper.

== Leadership ==

The current ruler is Duke [[Athtar]], who has been in power for 172 years. High elf nobles typically abdicate in favor of their [[Nobility#inheritance|heir or tanist]] at some point to seek other pursuits, as elf culture values change and a diversity of experiences. This makes Athtar's long reign - the longest in the Vale's history by almost 63 years - extremely unusual.

== History ==

While Swansing is the second major city to have been founded, it is not the second-oldest. As mentioned above, it was originally a small keep by Lake Toncor, hidden in the hills; the city has expanded considerably over the following millennium.

The coronet is one of, if not the most tightly held throughout the Vale's history. Nearly all of the title's holders have been dukes; there have only ever been one dux and two duchesses, and of those, but one duchess (Nallabe) gave her name to a district. A direct line can be traced, through heir or tanist, from the first duke to today. The title has never reverted to [[the crown]] or the [[grand duchy]].

In 243, Swansing Keep (what is now probably the Old Keep district) was beseiged by a force from the [[City of Brass]], led by [[Diascu]]. The siege lasted 34 days until it was broken by the [[Free Company of the Wolf]] and the dragon [[Thaszerain]].

Unlike the other [[duchy|duchies]] and most of the [[marquisate|marquisates]], there is no Castle Swansing. The Duke's residence was originally the Old Keep, referred to in contemporary sources simply as Swansing Keep. Exact dates are unclear, but by the time Yenshir was constructed, the duke had moved residence to a palace constructed in Rorgerry, currently in its third iteration.

Swansing is home to a famously insular mage's guild, which is run quite differently than the academic organizations or master/student relationships found in other cities. Although it provides many of the same services, such as research assistance through libraries and credentialing, it is not welcoming to spellcasters who have studied in other traditions. The mage's guild has several locations, although its guildhouse is located in Yenshir.

At the top of Nophica's Hill stands a temple dedicated to Nophica, the goddess of the harvest. Until the construction of Gienno's Wall, and the Gienno district, it was not actually part of the city. Tensions generated by the annexation have never truly subsided, and the temple has often found itself as a fierce counterbalance to the politics of the city. The only path to the top begins at the base of the Hill district, the most recent district to be constructed and the latest source of conflict between the city and the temple, who don't agree with its construction on the sacred hill.

He is most often depicted as a robed older man holding an hourglass. There are no recorded instances of his manifestation on the Material Plane.

==Worship==

Althyk governs the new year's celebration. Tradition has it that turning over an hourglass at midnight will help him keep the world moving forward.

==Myths==

Althyk's demiplane is unknown, although it is known that he does have one.

Althyk is unrelated to any other god. His rival is [[Rhalgr]], although Rhalgr does not seek Althyk's eradication, merely to test his resolve.

Althyk is said to be the first god, or perhaps a force of the universe, time, given form.

When Althyk dies at the end of time, it is said the War to End All Wars will begin. If the other gods can lay Althyk and the world to rest, it will not become a hellscape of eternal stagnation and entropy. [[Winnehild]]'s role in the end is to lead the heroes of the world's history to battle to buy time for this to happen.

Very few other myths are known about the remote and reserved Althyk, as he watches the world turn from a distance. He rarely replies, directly or indirectly, to spells like ''commune'' or ''divination'', and his power is almost never offered to clerics.
