After their short rest, [[Quill]] receives a sending from [[Astrid]]. She's been using most of her time coming up the [[Peakchester River|river]] to scry, and she expects to meet them in [[Redford]] the next day. However, she warns that their paths appear to be about to cross a force of evil, but she hasn't been able to glean any more information. The party assumes this has probably already passed when they defeated the bugbears.

They lay down to sleep. [[Mino]] and [[Corrin]] take the first watch. Corrin notices a hyena poking around and casts ''speak with animals'' to talk to it. It’s excited to tell “them” that it found a feast. Corrin doesn’t get more information before it runs off.

He and Mino come together on the same spot and Mino begins casting his own ''speak with animals''. In the meantime, [[Raen]] takes watch in the left passage. During the casting, Corrin and Raen see the hyena return with a second hyena and a gnoll hunter, who howls when he sees Raen in the mouth of the cave and initiates combat.

Things escalate from there. It takes several seconds for [[Ro]] to head back into the cave and wake up Quill and [[Quinn]] ([[Nergil]] and [[Pasky]] are already awake). Mino, Raen, and Corrin defeat the scout group, but wind up engaging new groups of gnolls from the west and east. When the casters make it to the entrance, they work together to take out the eastern group and an incoming southern group with fireballs, while a flind joins the group from the west. Raen spots a couple of flesh gnawers from the southwest while Corrin, the casters, and Quinn fire ranged attacks to pick off the south and the east. The group falls back to the mouth of the cave as the remaining gnolls (primarily the fangs, the flind, and the flesh gnawers) press in. Mino takes an attack from the flind’s flail that knocks him unconscious…
