Tahm Kench, the River King, is a demonic force of hunger personified that resides on the Material Plane. Unlike the devils of the Hells or the demons of the Abyss who are independent and can be killed, Tahm Kench's existence isn't separate from mortals and he can't be killed. According to his own words, so long as mortals exist and have desires, so will he.

Tahm consumes the desires of mortals, so he attempts to tempt them into wanting more and more. He has some instinctual knowledge of what a creature wants most, both the desire and how to grant it. However, this really only applies to those who summon him; otherwise, his base of knowledge is as limited as any other creature. He will tell the truth or lie as needed to entice a target.

Tahm's epithet of the River King relates to not just one river, but his ability to travel between nearly every river in the world (except for Tymill, as he reveals to a surprised Raen).

Legends[edit]

Dreli told the following story to the Lighthouse Inspectorz when describing Tahm Kench:

"There once was a young man renowned for his honesty. Though born in Redford, he desired a life beyond the poor banks he knew so well, and the River King promised him an unforgettable experience if only he would tell one little lie. It seemed harmless enough, so the raftsman bent the truth in conversation with his own brother. That night the demon appeared, revealing a fork in the river the raftsman had never noticed before. He followed it to a camp of foreign elves who offered him food and drink, and fresh companionship. As dawn neared, and the raftsman was full and ready to return to his people, the demon appeared again, promising an even greater experience for another lie. His interested piqued, the man accepted the bargain, telling falsehoods to his hosts. The river parted again and he followed it to an evening of even greater luxury. This continued, night after night, until the once-honest raftsman's deceits came as easily as breathing. When the river finally emptied into the sea at Old Bay, he found himself alone and lost in the big city — there was no one left to lie to, but no one who would know or believe the truth either. So many dark choices, all of them his own, had left the raftsman with no way back home."

Nirgel's father is extremely wary of Tahm Kench, going so far as to caution Nergil against dealing with him.

Encounters[edit]

In mid-April of 1337[1], the Lighthouse Inspectorz summoned Tahm Kench on the banks of the Peakchester at Redford. As a group, they asked three questions of him, learning the name of the man they had been chasing, Etheon Symol. Mino traded his sentinel shield to ask two more questions, learning the name of his birth village, Tirig, but attempted to outsmart the demon by leaving before the second question was asked.
